The Advertiser reported yesterday on a Senate Estimates question that revealed 1279 people in the last three years have died while on the NDIS waiting list. Our CEO, Jeff Smith, is quoted in the article, and also commented on 2GB and ABC Radio.
We have been talking about delays and issues with the NDIS for many years. As Jeff says in the article, the NDIA needs to be allowed enough staff to process all applications promptly, and a commitment to putting people with disability at the centre of the scheme.
Some key statistics from the Senate Estimates data:
- 75% of the people who died waiting for their supports were aged between 45 and 64
- Another 10% were aged 35 to 44
