SUMMARY:Sunshine Coast Advocacy Clinic
DESCRIPTION:A free Disability Advocacy Clinic is available on every 2nd Friday of the month from the P2P Office on the Sunshine Coast and via phone or zoom. \nParent to Parent is offering a free advocacy clinic with Miia Tolvanen from People with Disability Australia. \nMiia is an Individual Advocate based on the Sunshine Coast. \nAppointments are available either in person at the Parent to Parent Woombye office or via phone on the 2nd Friday of each month. \nBookings are required\, if you wish to make an appointment\, please fill out the form. \nTopics Miia can cover include: \n\nGuardianship and administration related matters.\nGoing to an external review (ART) for your NDIS plan.\nSupported decision making.\nHow to make a complaint about your NDIS services\, or any other service.\nChild protection related issues (if your clients have any involvement with the Department of Child Safety).\n\nSome things to remember: \n\n\nMiia is not able to provide any legal advice or support.\nThe 1 hr session is for advice only\, Miia would not be looking to take the person on as a client for individual advocacy. The person can book in again for a follow up clinic/advice session if they want.\nMiia may be able to pick up some cases for individual advocacy when she has capacity. It is important to note that individual advocacy is a short term\, issue focused approach. Individual advocacy is not a substitute for any funded or formal supports such as NDIS support coordination. Individual advocacy is not mediation\, counselling or case management.\nThere is no cost.\nMiia would need to record some basic information such as name\, DOB\, address (post code only)\, gender\, ATSI status\, citizenship status and details about disability. Miia will need to record these into our system for auditing and funding related purposes.

SUMMARY:18th Conference of the States Parties of the CRPD Side Event
DESCRIPTION:Ending restrictive practices against First Nations people with disability: Finding a culturally sensitive way forward\nRestrictive practices\, such as physical restraint\, seclusion and forced medication\, are widely used against people with disability in many institutional and community-based settings around the world.\n\nThese practices not only violate the rights protected under the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities\, but also result in severe physical and psychological harm\, often causing life-long trauma.\n\nThese practices are especially harmful when applied to people facing intersecting forms of marginalisation. First Nations people with disability face compounding discrimination in environments such as schools\, workplaces\, healthcare settings\, psychiatric institutions\, juvenile justice systems and prisons. The overuse and misuse of restrictive practices in these settings reflect entrenched ableism\, racism\, and colonial attitudes.\n\nWhile the need to eliminate restrictive practices is increasingly acknowledged\, achieving this goal requires deep structural change and culturally safe\, rights-based alternatives.\n\nAt this event\, we will hear from three First Nations people with disability about their experiences of restrictive practices and how to achieve societal change to eliminate their use. Megan Spindler-Smith (Deputy-CEO\, PWDA) and Tahlia-Rose Vanissum (Woppaburra Woman and First Nations Disability and Gender Justice Advocate) will lead an interactive discussion with attendees reflecting on the speakers’ experiences and discussing possible ways forward.\n\nWatch at: https://us06web.zoom.us/j/82489781220\n\n\n\nLocal time zone conversions for event on Monday 9 June at 1:15 PM – 2:30 PM (EDT):\n\n \n\n Sydney – Tuesday 10 June 2025 at 3:15 AM (AEST)\n \n Adelaide – Tuesday 10 June at 2:45 AM (ACST)\n \n Perth – Tuesday 10 June at 1:15 AM (AWST)\n \n Brisbane – Tuesday 10 June at 3:15 AM (AEST)

SUMMARY:Sunshine Coast Disability Advocacy Clinic
