We Are PWDA: The National Peak Representative Body Advocating for the Rights and Inclusion for LGBTQIA+ People with Disability
People with Disability Australia (PWDA) is proud to be the national peak body representing LGBTQIA+ people with disability. Our community is diverse, resilient, and deserving of full participation and inclusion in every space.
As an organisation led by and for people with disability, PWDA is committed to systemic advocacy, policy reform, and community-led initiatives that create meaningful change for LGBTQIA+ people with disability.
Whether you are here to advocate, learn or connect with our intersectional community, you are welcome.
Let’s not just talk about inclusion. Let’s work together for real, systemic change that ensures accessibility, safety, and celebration of our identities.
PWDA President Trinity Ford
Our Commitment to LGBTQIA+ People with Disability
LGBTQIA+ people with disability experience their own distinct barriers that deserve dedicated advocacy and action. As the national peak representing LGBTQIA+ people with disability, we are committed to ensuring that our LGBTQIA+ voices are heard, and that we inform policies about us.
In July 2024, the Australian Government formally funded PWDA to lead this work at a national level. This investment allows us to:
Advance LGBTQIA+ people with disability’s inclusion in services, policies, and advocacy.
Represent LGBTQIA+ people with disability in national and international policy discussions.
Support community-led initiatives that amplify the voices and lived experience of LGBTQIA+ people with disability to drive change.
Ensure LGBTQIA+ spaces and services prioritise accessibility and inclusion.
Provide inclusive individual advocacy and referral services for the LGBTQIA+ community
Establish a central resource hub and referral network for LGBTQIA+ people with disability
Offer a range of services including training and consultancy.
For over 40 years, PWDA has been a ‘Voice of Our Own’ driving advocacy, systemic reform and policy development to uphold the rights of people with disability. We have been representing LGBTQIA+ people with disability for 40 years, and as the new peak for LGBTQIA+ people with disability, we will make sure our community is not only included, but at the centre of the conversation. We will achieve this by strengthening our governance structures to support this goal.
We need to be seen, we need to be heard, and we need to be valued – not just in disability spaces, but in LGBTQIA+ spaces, in policy, and in every decision that affects our lives.
PWDA CEO Sebastian Zagarella
Addressing Barriers, Driving Change
As LGBTQIA+ people with disability we continue to face unique systemic exclusion and discrimination. PWDA is committed to driving systemic change which addresses:
Lack of prioritisation – Many government and social policies fail to address the specific needs of LGBTQIA+ people with disability.
Limited opportunities for representation – The voices and lived experiences of LGBTQIA+ people with disability are often excluded from decision-making processes and policy frameworks that impact our lives.
Lack of inclusive and affirming services and supports – There are many barriers preventing our access to disability and LGBTQIA+ affirming services and supports.
Discrimination and exclusion – LGBTQIA+ and disability spaces may not be accessible or fail to recognise our gender identities, sexuality and autonomy.
PWDA is working to change this through strong advocacy, partnerships and direct engagement with our community. PWDA is committed to a future where society fully embraces the diversity of our community.
Building Community and Visibility
PWDA creates safe spaces where LGBTQIA+ people with disability can be authentically themselves, connect, lead our work and celebrate our identities.
Our engagement in key events ensures our community are unapologetically present, represented and visible.
Key Events:
