First Nations people with disability face specific and heightened barriers in their lives. That’s why we developed the Talk Up Project.

Talk Up Project

Talk Up is a project that aims to help Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people with a disability understand their legal rights and empower them to advocate for themselves.

Legal rights include areas such as:

  • Employment
  • Housing
  • Police & criminal justice system
  • Discrimination

Following a period of consultation with relevant communities, the project will produce a range of educational resources (such as flyers, booklets, fact sheets) and deliver workshops for community members.

The project will be working in three main locations:

  • Western Sydney
  • Dubbo
  • Northern Rivers

Project partners

The Talk Up project is run in partnership with First People’s Disability Network and the Australian Centre for Disability Law.

With the expertise and experience of these organisations in First Nations disability and disability law, respectively, the project will be developing resources that fill identified gaps and are needed by community.

Community consultation and stakeholder engagement

All aspects of this project are guided by genuine community consultation and stakeholder engagement. The project team – which includes the PWDA Project Manager, ACDL Solicitor and FPDN Cultural Liaison – are travelling to selected locations across NSDW to speak directly with community members and listen to their stories and needs.

The Project Advisory Group also provides input and guidance on the direction of the Project. This group is made up of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people with a disability.
