People with Disability Australia proudly presents an online LGBTQIA+ pride event ‘Free to be Proud’
Monday 24 February

On Wednesday 19 February, PWDA held an online event celebrating LGBTQIA+ disability pride – ‘Free to be Proud’.
We invited a fantastic line-up of speakers who are all PWDA members, advocates, and respected voices in the LGBTQIA+ community.
Daniel McDonald, Margherita Coppolino, Isabella Choate, Margie McCumstie, Is Hay and Hayden Moon were joined in the conversation by PWDA President Trinity Ford and CEO Sebastian Zagarella.
We were excited to welcome so many of our members at the event, representing our LGBTQIA+ community and sharing our voice.
How to watch ‘Free to be Proud’
If you were unable to attend the event on the day, you can watch the recording below or click on the button to be taken to YouTube.
The intersection of LQBTQIA+ and disability pride
The Free to be Proud event included important conversations about the barriers our community face and how we can create change so that we can truly be free to be proud.
The event focused on how LGBTQIA+ people with disability deserve to be seen, heard included and respected everywhere and in every space. It was also a chance to celebrate our community, share experiences and connect in a safe and welcoming space.
About PWDA
PWDA is a disabled people’s organisation, or DPO for short, which means we are made-up of, and led by, people disability. PWDA has a strong tie to the LQBTQIA+ community with over 1/3 of our members identifying as LQBTQIA+, and we’ve long advocated for our community’s choice and control over our bodies, identities and sexuality.
A significant number of our team are also LQBTQIA+, and we have an inclusive recruitment focus and foster a disability affirming culture. We are funded by the Australian Government as the national peak to represent LGBTQIA+ people with disability.
