About the project

People with Disability Australia (PWDA) is delivering the Access to Healing and Recovery project to help strengthen the accessibility of healing and recovery services for woman, feminine-identifying or non-binary person with disability across NSW.

People with disability have the right to access safe, inclusive and accessible support after experiencing domestic, family or sexual violence.

People with disability experience sexual violence at significantly higher rates than people without disability. However, physical, communication, attitudinal, informational and systemic barriers can make it harder to access the services and support needed for healing and recovery.

The project will work alongside woman, feminine-identifying or non-binary person with disability, healing and recovery services, Aboriginal community-controlled organisations and other partners to identify barriers and develop practical ways to make services more accessible and inclusive.

What will the project do?

Access to Healing and Recovery will build the knowledge, skills and confidence of services to better support woman, feminine-identifying or non-binary person with disability.

Through consultation and co-design, the project will:

  • increase the confidence and skills of healing and recovery service staff to support people with disability
  • help services identify and remove physical, attitudinal, systemic and informational barriers
  • strengthen disability-inclusive and trauma-informed practice
  • improve accessible and inclusive communication
  • provide practical tools that services can use to improve accessibility
  • strengthen collaboration between people with disability, disability organisations, healing and recovery services and community organisations.

How can I get involved?

People with disability will be at the centre of the project.

There will be different opportunities to participate throughout the project, including:

  • taking part in focus groups and consultations
  • contributing to the co-design of resources and activities
  • participating in workshops
  • providing feedback on project resources and training.

We particularly encourage participation from people with diverse experiences and backgrounds, including LGBTIQA+ people with disability and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people with disability.

We will share opportunities to get involved on this page as they become available.

Have your say

Share your experience and help improve access to healing and recovery services.

PWDA is inviting woman, feminine-identifying or non-binary person with disability who has participated in or tried to access domestic, family and sexual violence healing and recovery services to complete a survey.

We want to understand:

  • what has worked well when accessing healing and recovery services.
  • what barriers exist and what has made it difficult to get support.
  • what supports are needed to make access easier.
  • what needs to change to make services safer, more accessible and inclusive.

Complete the access to healing and recovery services survey in a new page.

For healing and recovery services

Healing and recovery services and community organisations can also participate in the project.

Complete the Strengthening Healing and Recovery services survey for service providers in a new page.

Opportunities may include working with PWDA to identify accessibility barriers, contributing to co-design, developing accessibility action plans, participating in training and workshops, and testing practical resources.

If your organisation would like to be involved, we would like to hear from you.

Working in partnership

PWDA will work with organisations and communities across NSW to ensure the project is informed by local knowledge, lived experience and professional expertise.

Orange Local Aboriginal Land Council (Orange LALC) is a confirmed project partner, with additional partnerships to be developed throughout the project.

Keeping participation safe and accessible

We recognise that conversations about domestic, family and sexual violence can be difficult.

Participation will be approached in a trauma-informed way that respects people’s safety, privacy, choice and control. People will not be expected to share personal experiences they do not want to share.

We will work to make project activities accessible and provide information about available accessibility adjustments and supports when people register to participate.

Stay updated

We will continue to update this page with project news, opportunities to participate, upcoming workshops and new resources.

You can also subscribe to PWDA communications to hear about opportunities to have your say and participate in our work.
