Creating Access project

In 2018, PWDA collaborated with Youth Action to build the capacity of the youth sector in NSW to be responsive, inclusive and accessible to young people with disability.

The project was led by an advisory group, consulting with young people with disability on the barriers they face to accessing youth services and linking with organisations to make them more accessible.

Once the project concluded, a toolkit was created to help youth services become more accessible for young people with disability, and to help young people with disability learn more about how to advocate for themselves. Find the contents below.

Disability inclusion toolkit

We developed a toolkit of resources to help share learnings from the Creating Access project across NSW. We created resources to support young people with disability to learn more about self-advocacy, alongside resources for youth services who want to review and increase the accessibility of their organisation.

We also created a series of videos featuring young members from our Expert Advisory Group sharing their personal stories and experiences. There are also videos featuring youth services who have participated in the project sharing their experience on increasing the accessibility of their service.

Self-advocacy resources

As part of the Creating Access project, we have created accessible self-advocacy factsheets to support young people with disability to feel confident speaking up about issues that are impacting them directly, or when advocating on a larger scale to help create positive changes in society.

Our aim is to provide accessible information to young people about your rights, things you may choose to speak up about, the skills you may need, what to do if you’re not seeing change and where you can go for support.

Accessibility resources

As part of the Creating Access project, we have created resources to support youth services across NSW become more accessible to young people with disability. These resources will assist youth services to review and increase the accessibility of their service, and become inclusive to all young people, including those with disability.

PWDA have also created a more comprehensive resource called the ‘Access Review Template’ which is available for purchase. This is a more complex tool that can help you identify specific gaps in your organisations accessibility, and is beneficial for any organisations who wish to conduct a more thorough self-assessment of their service.
